Sound Insulation Testing
A test to measure the resistance to sound provided by a building element such as a separating wall, window, partition, or floor, that is, restriction of sound travelling between separate spaces or rooms through walls, floor, and ceilings.
The sound reduction index of a building element is an important quantity in noise abatement. It is determined in sound transmission suite. Laboratory airborne sound insulation (weighted sound reduction index, or sound transmission loss (sound transmission class, STC) will be reported.
Sound Absorption Testing
A test to measure the sound absorption characteristics of any absorbing treatments or products. These treatments or products is important to decrease the echo and reverberation within the room and improve speech intelligibility and overall clarity.
ASTM C423 is the standard widely used in America for sound absorption and sound absorption coefficients. The NRC and SAA will be reported for products that have extended plane surfaces.
The ISO 354 will report sound absorption coefficient for plane absorbers and the equivalent sound absorption area per object for single objects.
In both sound transmission suite and reverberation room, it is important that high sound reverberant build up and a diffuse sound field are attained to test materials. Therefore, room characteristics and design should be included in every reports. Room size should be at least 200 .
